Chemical castration, a possible punishment against convicted paedophiles

KUALA LUMPUR: Chemical castration may be an effective measure in bringing a halt to sexual paedophiles, says Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

She told the Dewan Rakyat today that a taskforce chaired by the minister was in the midst of reviewing policies that could potentially bring a stop to the heinous act.

Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin (PKR-Bukit Katil) had earlier cited the decision made by Indonesia, which planned to chemically castrate paedophiles using female hormones.

Azizah said in response that the move was possible and could be considered for implementation.

The country was given a rude awakening early this year when British national Richard Huckle pleaded guilty to 71 sexual offences against children as young as six months.

In June, he was sentenced to jail for life by a court in London for sexually molesting 23 children in Malaysia, and babies and children in Cambodia in the span of a decade.
