Search for Japanese merchant sailor resumes in waters off Malacca

MALACCA: Search and rescue (SAR) efforts for a missing Japanese sailor at Pantai Puteri here resumed at 8am today.

The 56 year-old is believed to have fallen from a merchant ship, the MT Doha, near the waters off Pulau Upeh yesterday.

Melaka Tengah police deputy chief superintendent Mohd Kamal Zainal said authorities were informed of the incident at 12.15pm yesterday.

He said an SAR team involving personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department (APM) was mobilised for the operation which was halted at nightfall yesterday.

It is learnt that the ship was heading to Port Klang at the time of the incident.
