Photo frame factory gutted by blaze, 2 injured

ALOR STAR: A fireman and a 16 year-old teenager were injured when a factory in Jalan Datuk Kumbar here went up in flames last night.

The fireman, 27, suffered breathing difficulties, while the teenager sustained injuries on his hand in the 8.30pm fire.

Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue station operation commander Mohamad Shukri Zulkapri said the department received a distress call at 8.51pm and arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

According to Shukri, it took the team, assisted by 88 volunteer firemen, about 20 minutes to control the fire which destroyed about 90 per cent of the 300 ft × 100 ft photo frame factory.

It is learnt that the estimated losses caused by the fire is RM3 million, inclusive of various equipment and machines, as well as two vehicles.

Factory owner Gan Hock Tyan, 53, said three of his staff were at the premises when the fire broke out.

"About 70,000 photo frames which have been processed were reduced to ashes, and 6,000 of the frames were scheduled to be delivered to several Teacher's Training Institutes for convocation ceremonies," he said when met.
