KULAI: Police were forced to open fire on a 20-year-old suspected robber as he attempted to run over several officers with his
getaway car.
The suspect sustained a bullet wound to his waist.
In the 4pm incident near Jalan Selendang 17, in Taman Mewah here, a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit from the Kulai
station was in hot pursuit of two robbers who had earlier allegedly committed a robbery in Johor Baru, and were later spotted in
Taman Desa Kulai.
State police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the patrol unit managed to trace the suspects, who had tried to hide in
a palm oil plantation in Jalan Tan Yoke Fong.
"When approached, the suspects' vehicle was stationary.
"The 20-year-old, who was the driver, suddenly started the car and sped towards the police.
"A shot was fired when the suspects tried to run down the police after ignoring orders to stand down and surrender," said
Najmuddin, adding that the two men managed to evade arrest and fled.
Police gave chase and after a 2km pursuit, the suspects were cornered, and arrested after their vehicle skidded and crashed into
the front of a house in Jalan Selendang.
"The 20-year-old sustained a bullet wound to the waist, while the second suspect, a 21-year-old, suffered minor injuries due to the
crash. Both were sent to the Kulai hospital for treatment and were later detained," he said.
Najmuddin said with the arrest of the two suspects, police have solved a series of robberies in the Johor Jaya and Taman Perling
areas.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
