Najib: Malaysia ready to extend aid to quake-hit Aceh

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is ready to extend aid to Indonesians in Pidie Jaya, following a devastating earthquake which struck the Aceh province in northern Sumatra, early this morning.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Malaysia shares Indonesia’s grief over the tragedy.

“Our sincerest condolences to the families of victims of the Aceh earthquake tragedy. Malaysia shares Indonesia’s sorrow and is ready to extend whatever aid needed,” he wrote in a facebook posting.

The 6.5-magnitude scale earthquake struck around 5.03am local time. Reports suggest that almost 100 people perished in the disaster.

Aceh has declared a state of emergency and rescuers are toiling away to rescue survivors trapped underneath fallen buildings.
