Two Singaporeans fined RM1,500 for hurting policeman

MALACCA: Two Singaporeans were fined RM1,500 each by the Magistrate’s Court here today for causing harm to a policeman here last month.

Othman Abdul Rashid, 41, from Teban Garden Road and Muhammad Hairul Hamdan, 38, from Woodlands Drive, pleaded guilty after the charge was read to them by the court interpreter before Magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh.

Firdaus ordered both the accused to serve three months in jail if they failed to pay the fine.

The men were accused of voluntarily causing hurt to Corporal Mohamad Hazim Hassan, 36, behind the Imperial Heritage Hotel in Taman Melaka Raya at around 7.30 pm on Nov 19 this year.

They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code and tried together under Section 34 of the same Code, which carries a maximum jail sentence of one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Syazreen Nadia Saaban prosecuted while both the accused were unrepresented.
