Two policemen hauled-up by MACC on suspicion of extortion

KOTA KINABALU: Two policemen who accepted RM5,000 to close investigations into a brawl involving a labourer has been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sandakan.

A sub-inspector and a sergeant, both 50 and attached with the Sandakan district police, were detained at 5.04pm today in an operation at Kampung Bahagia, Batu Sapi in Sandakan.

“The complainant was a 34-year-old labourer who filed the complaint stating the incident took place yesterday at 11am at Sandakan city when he met the two individuals.

Sabah MACC director Datuk Shaharom Nizam Abd Manap said in a statement that the sergeant has asked for a sum of money as payment for solving the complainant’s case on December 12 last year.

“Both have been sent to the district lock-up and their statements will be recorded tomorrow morning,” said Shaharom.

No remand have been proposed so far and the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of MACC Act 2009 for soliciting/receiving gratification.
