40 nabbed for gambling in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: Police detained 40 people in a major operation to curb gambling activities including unlicensed lotteries around the city yesterday.

Johor Police Chief, Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the detention involved local citizens and foreigners, including buyers of illegal lotteries aged between 20 and 55 years old.

“In the operation which began at 3pm, police raided 23 premises suspected of carrying out gambling activities including unlicensed lotteries.

“We also seized 65 mobile phones of various brands, 32 mobile printers, two calculating machines, eight note books, two pens and a closed-circuit camera,” he said in a statement here today.

All those detained will be charged under Section 4A(a) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953 which carries a jail term of not more than five years or a fine of not more than RM200,000 upon conviction.

Also participating in the raid were officers from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Internal Revenue Board (IRB), Immigration Department and the Royal Customs.-- BERNAMA
