Rescuers turn to drones as search for missing boy near Pantai Keluang enters fifth day

BESUT: Search and rescue team deployed three drones as search for a boy who went missing while swimming with three friends near Pantai Bukit Keluang last Saturday, entered the fifth day today.

District deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Kasmani Hassan said the drones, handled by three operators from Novas Production, were used since yesterday to get an aerial view of the location and assist the search and rescue team in the operation.

He said a total of 116 people were involved in today's search for missing 12-year-old Muhammad Izzat Haikal Alias.

Apart from police and Rela members, district Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Civil Defence Force, and villagers also took part in the SAR effort.

"Nineteen boats and a jet ski are used to comb areas from Pantai Bukit Keluang, Pulau Rhu and up to Pantai Beting Lintang," he said.

Kasmani said on Saturday, Izzat and three of his friends went for a swim at the beach without informing their parents at 3.30pm.

"Izzat and Nik Mohd Haikal Fitri Nik Shamsuddin, 13, went missing after they were swept by strong current while the other two boys managed to swim to safety," he said.

Haikal's body was found on Sunday morning, about 200 metres from the location where they were last spotted.
