Sabah flooding eases, all evacuation centres closed

KOTA MARUDU: All 11 flood evacuation centres here and one in Pitas were officially closed this morning.

Malaysian Civil Defence Force state director Colonel Muliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said 2,957 evacuees from 936 families were allowed to return home as the flooding situation improved.

Meanwhile, authorities estimate that losses incurred from the two-day flood amount to RM15 million.

Kota Marudu MP Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the Public Works Department will continue to assess total losses and damage to paddy fields, roads, drainage systems and bridges.

"A complete report will be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Department soon.

"The priority is to ensure that the needs of flood victims are met," he said when visiting and presenting aid to evacuees at the Youth and Sports Hall in Tandek here on Friday.

Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who oversees the National Security Council, and Tandek assemblywoman Datuk Anita Baranting.

Ongkili, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water minister, said he hopes that assistance to affected victims can be settled before Chinese New Year.
