KEEP IT SIMPLE: Go wide this CNY

The wide angle lens is perfect for this festive occasion, writes Razz Rozzfaisal

THE wide-angle lens is usually used in landscape photography but it is also perfect for capturing the vibrant colours of Chinese New Year. The lens normally has a focal length between 10mm and 24mm, and you can see this written on the body on the lens. All lens makers from Canon to Nikon and third-party makers like Sigma, Tamron and Samyang have their versions of the wide-angle lens.

Here are some tips to help you optimise your wide-angle lens.

1. LOOK FOR LEADING LINES: Wide-angle lens will exaggerate this and help you create an inviting photo. Leading lines capture the attention of the viewer. It leads the eye further into the photo.

2. GET CLOSE TO YOUR SUBJECT: By doing this, your photos will have a dramatic effect. Preferably, place your subject in the centre as it will lessen the distortion which is common with the wide-angle lens.

3. LAYER YOUR SUBJECTS: A wide-angle lens gives you room to include more subjects into your photos. Thus, enhancing your storytelling ability. Layer them as such that your subjects make-up their own story.

4. EXPERIMENT WITH VERTICAL COMPOSITION: Due to distortion in wide-angle lenses, vertical composition is seldom applied other than in landscape photography. Experiment with this composition as it will give you a fresh perspective. You may be surprised.

5. USE IT WITH CHILDREN: Children are active and photographing them using a wide-angle lens provides some sense of adventure and exploration.
