Keep cops informed to help curb house break-ins during CNY, IGP urges public

PETALING JAYA: Those returning to their hometowns for Chinese New Year are urged to keep the police informed at nearby stations or via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP 2.0) mobile application.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said VSP 2.0 was an new initiative to help curb house break-ins during the holiday season.

It is part of Op Selamat 21, which will be implemented nationwide from tomorrow until Feb12.

Themed "Safe Homes, Safe Arrival", the campaign aims to minimise road accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow while preventing house break-ins.

"I advise homeowners to report their absence during Chinese New Year celebrations at nearby police stations or register with the new and user-friendly VSP 2.0 application.

"The police will conduct patrols around buildings or premises that are reported.

"Patrols will also be carried out in areas with potential for crime," he said during the launch of Op Selamat Chinese New Year 21 at Persada PLUS Subang here today.

Razarudin called on road users to be more responsible amid the high traffic flow during the festive season, and to avoid any unwanted accidents by strictly adhering to traffic rules.

"As much as 72 per cent of fatal accidents involve motorcycles, while 10 per cent involve lorries. So far, the main cause of accidents is speeding," he said.

He added that 18 hotspots and 46 black spots were targeted on all major highways throughout Op Selamat 21, while 407 hotspots and 76 black spots were identified in contingents and districts.
