Kota Baru trader orders 180 citrus trees for this year's CNY celebration

KOTA BARU: Each time Chinese New Year arrives, Wee Pock Soon will never forget to order citrus trees to be sold as a decorative item at his shop.

This year for the Year of Dragon, the 63-year-old has purchased 180 of the trees from his regular client in Perak.

"It has been a must for many years to order the citrus trees for my clients.

"For this year, l have ordered nearly 180 of the trees and it arrived from Perak via lorry last month.

"The trees will normally sold like hot cakes as my regular clients already know where to find the trees.

"This trees are used to decorate their houses and other premises in conjunction with Chinese New Year," said the father of three.

Wee, who is the owner of Wee Garden at Jalan Sultan Ibrahim here said he sells the citrus trees for between RM100 and RM180 each.

"My customers are not only from Kota Baru but come from all over the state. They started buying the trees since last week," said Wee who has been in business since 1973.

Citrus fruits are particularly prized and are often used in Chinese New Year celebrations.

Like the Christmas tree in Christmas celebrations, the mandarin or orange tree symbolises the start of the festive period and may be displayed in Chinese restaurants or Chinese homes in the run-up to the main celebration.
