Remand extended for army vet suspect in Sg Petani bank heist

ALOR STAR: Police today obtained a week-long remand extension against an army veteran detained for a robbery attempt at a UOB Bank branch in Sungai Petani last Wednesday.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Md Isa, in a statement, said police had applied for the remand extension to complete their investigation into the 50-year-old manager of a private security company, who hails from Sungai Lalang, Bedong.

It was reported that the suspect had barged into the bank at 8.35am and trained his weapon at one of the two security guards on duty.

One of the guards had pounced on the suspect, who fired two shots in an ensuing struggle, which struck the guard's legs.

Police are investigating the case under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) 1971, for weapon possession and Section 8(A) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of live bullets.

The man is also being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 408 of the same Code for breach of trust involving RM120,000 from his company.

The man could face the mandatory death sentence for illegally discharging firearms under Section 3 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) 1971.
