Leptospirosis detected in three of 12 victims with respiratory infection symptoms

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry confirmed this evening that they have detected leptospirosis in three of the 12 victims with respiratory infection symptoms.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said: “We are still investigating the source of contamination. We are still conducting more tests before we can issue a statement,” he told the

New Straits Times yesterday.

“It is not a mysterious virus outbreak.”

Earlier, he advised the public not to panic over the fatal pneumonia case involving a 59-year-old man in Tanah Merah, Kelantan as no new infection cases were detected among members of the dead victim’s family as well as other contacts.

He said the incident, which resulted in the death of the man on Feb 5, was an isolated respiratory tract infection cluster.

“All cases reported are still confined to those who attended a family gathering in Kajang, Selangor.

“The pneumonia cluster infection is being closely monitored by the ministry with the cooperation of the health departments in Kelantan and Selangor,” he said in a statement yesterday.
