JOHOR BARU: An 18-year-old youth has been arrested following a police report lodged over a Facebook posting calling for the public, especially youths, to gather and meet with the Sultan of Johor and the police over a recent accident which killed eight teenage cyclists.

Johor police chief Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Wan Mohd said the youth was arrested at a house in Taman Desa Cemerlang in Ulu Tiram here at 1.45am on Wednesday.

"The arrest was made following a report over the posting, which poses a threat to the prosperity and harmony of the country. We also seized a mobile phone from the suspect," said Najmuddin.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

"I would like to advise the public to not spread any statements that could be a threat to public safety or to be influenced by such statements.

"The public should also refrain from making any assumptions regarding the accident," said Najmuddin.

In the February 11 accident, eight teenagers, who were riding their modified bicycles in a group of between 30 and 40 people, were killed when a car ploughed into the group in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam here at about 3am.
