Police corporal detained over accident which killed teen motorcyclist

MELAKA: A police corporal has been detained to assist in a probe into an accident which killed a teenager who rammed into a patrol vehicle.

Melaka police chief, Datuk Zainol Samah said the policeman, attached to the Durian Tunggal police station, was detained at the Alor Gajah district police headquarters this morning.

The police are still recording the 37-year-old corporal's statement. The policeman's urine test returned negative.

Zainol also said the case has been reclassified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving which causes death.

Those convicted under the act face a jail term of between five to 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 to RM50,000.

Meanwhile, Zainol said they have received six reports on the incident and they have taken statements from witnesses and the victim's family members.

He reiterated that the probe into the incident will be fair and transparent.

In the incident on Wednesday, Mohammad Khairul Basahri,18, who was on a motorcycle, crashed into a police four-wheel-drive that was on patrol in Durian Tunggal.

The vehicle was patrolling the area following complaints of illegal racing.

He succumbed to injury after fighting for his life for more than nine hours at the intensive care unit of the Melaka Hospital.
