FSR corners bike ECU market with TuneBoss

FSR Technology is a homegrown name that is fast making waves in the local motorcycle scene with its innovative product, the TuneBoss.

Last week, it unveiled the latest versions of TuneBoss, an aftermarket Engine Control Unit (ECU) that is designed to increase power and optimise fuel efficiency of selected motorcycles.

The newly-launched TuneBoss products are made specifically for the Yamaha R25, Yamaha Lagenda 115z and Honda RS150R.

This brings to 10 the number of motorcycle models that are compatible with the TuneBoss ECU since it was launched three year ago. Existing models include the Yamaha FZ150i, the Yamaha M-Slaz and the Yamaha Y15ZR.

FSR chief operating officer Mohd Suffian Zamali told a press conference the TuneBoss ECU allows the user to change certain parameters on the engine, such as adjusting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion system and optimising the spark timing.

What is so special is that all TuneBoss ECUs come with Bluetooth wireless technology. TuneBoss ECU functions can be accessed easily by downloading the “TuneBoss Manager” application, for free.

For a fee, TuneBoss users can upgrade to the “Race Package” which will give them access to, among others, the “Quick Shifter” and “Launch Control” functions.

FSR claims that the TuneBoss accurately performs fuel adjustments whereby fuel addition or reduction is done to achieve the optimal air-fuel ratio.

It is also capable of precision ignition timing to allow for optimum combustion and maximum performance.

Suffian said for the time being, the TuneBoss application is only available for Android devices. The company is working on an iOS application.

The TuneBoss application is in charge of the advanced diagnostics tool - detecting and displaying problems in a simple and intuitive manner.

Data logging is practically unlimited too. You can keep track of engine temperature, battery voltage, engine RPM and other important parameters via the android device.

TuneBoss has a hassle-free installation process - simply plug and play. No complex wiring is required as it uses the same OEM compatible connector as the stock ECU.

Rider security also gets top priority. The updated TuneBoss application will send emergency alerts via text message to users when they fail to respond to the app in the event that the motorcycle’s “down sensor” is triggered. The alert will then notify up to three contacts of the latest GPS location of the rider.

Chief executive officer Farhan M Ali said although TuneBoss is designed only for the 10 bikes, FSR would consider product customisations to cater to other models.

The company is working on several future upgrades, which include an advanced RPM extender, shift light, ShiftBoss quickshifter, wideband auto tune, dual injectors (per cylinder), electric water pump control, aux output control and launch control.

Besides constructing, these two computer heads use their chip design background to also provide research and development consultancy and work for special hardware IP (FPGA, IP Soft) in developing customised embedded systems with PC and smartphone connectivity.

The Made-in-Malaysia TuneBoss is now available in Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico and Europe.

The performance of the TuneBoss ECU is proven, with teams such as the KKMR RNM TUNEBOSS Racing winning the opening race in the KBS-MAM Kapcai Endurance Race. This is the first time a fuel injection motorcycle won the event.

TuneBoss is also the technology sponsor for the TKKR Racing Team in the CubPrix 2017 (Yamaha Y15) and ARRC (Yamaha R25).

At the press conference, FSR also presented prizes for its lucky draw competition, which was held from January 15 to February 15. Muhammad Zulhanif Hamidon won a Honda RS150R motorcycle equipped with a TuneBoss ECU.

FSR, which gets its name from the initials of founders Farhan and Sufian, and what they specialise in, which is, “research”, celebrates its sixth anniversary this month.

The company was formed in February 2011 and came up with TubeBoss ECU in 2014. FSR was built on self-financing, with the support of a development grant from Cradle Fund, an agency under the Finance Ministry.
