#NSTviral: Netizens slam male cyclists hogging women-only coaches with bikes

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite the implementation of ladies-only coaches on the Kajang MRT line last year, there were still countless occasions when men occupy the seats in these coaches.

There was another incident recently involving a group of male cyclists which has made its rounds on social media.

This time, these men were occupying the ladies-only coaches with their bicycles.

Footage of the incident was posted by a Twitter user @pedoqpop via a direct message to the New Straits Times.

The incident caused outrage among netizens, who questioned the cyclists' inconsiderate act.

Many of them questioned whether a bicycle on board the train was allowed but checks by the NST discovered that bicycles and scooters were indeed allowed on the trains.

According to the guidelines provided by the MRT Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp), passengers can bring foldable scooters and non-foldable bikes onto the train during non-peak hours.

However, netizens expressed their frustration on how certain rules were being violated as the space was meant to be occupied by female passengers.

User Danial Faiz (@danialfaiz2909) said while a bicycle was allowed, the group violated the rules as they occupied the ladies-only space.

Another user @lina0508 said: "Cyclists should sit at the front or the rear side (of the coach). Why sit at the ladies coach? Luckily there aren't many people around."

The post gained almost one million views and 1,400 reposts on Twitter.

In September last year, the Transport Ministry launched the ladies-only coaches on the Kajang MRT Line to provide a comfortable environment for women when travelling.

The move was first introduced in 2010 when the KTM Komuter introduced the ladies' coach in the interest of its women commuters, who make up 60 per cent of passengers.

The ladies' coaches are differentiated with pink stickers displayed on the outer and inner parts of the coach, bearing the word 'Coach for Ladies Only' as well as special waiting areas.
