(Olympics) Golfers Danny, Gavin struggle in opening round

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysian golfers Danny Chia and Gavin Kyle Green failed to sizzle as they got their Rio Olympics campaigns off the ground with identical two-over par 73s on Thursday.

Danny, in the same flight as Felipe Aguilar of Chile and Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark, double-bogeyed the par-five 18th and also lost shots on the 3rd, 4th, 12th and 15th.

Danny carded birdies on the 7th, 9th, 10th and 16th.

Aquilar ended his round with a 71 while Kjeldsen also carded a 73.

Gavin, on the same fliight as Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Belgian Thomas Pieters had birdies on the 5th, 10th and 18th but his good work was wiped out by bogeys on the 7th, 9th, 11th, 12th and 13th.

Pieters fired a 67 while Kiradech finished his round with par 71.

Australia's Marcus Fraser held the clubhouse lead with an impressive 63, for a three-shot lead at the top.
