(UPDATE) 2 famous Penang 'nasi kandar' restaurants infested with rats, cockroaches, ordered shut

GEORGE TOWN: Rat droppings, dead rats and cockroaches.

These were some of the shocking discoveries at two famous nasi kandar restaurants here, made during a joint-operation between the state Health Department and the Penang Island City Council this morning.

The two restaurants are the 70-year-old Line Clear Restaurant and 28-year-old Yasmeen Nasi Kandar Restaurant at Jalan Penang here.

The unhygienic items were noted by enforcement personnel in the storerooms of the establishments, located just next to the kitchens.

The restaurants were later ordered to close for two weeks, beginning today.

The Council's public health alternate chairman, Ong Ah Teong, said the two outlets had been given two weeks to clean up their act before they are allowed to operate again.

"What we found was most unhygienic and can affect the health of those consuming the food at the two outlets," Ong said after the joint raids.

The two outlets contravene Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.
