KUALA LUMPUR: Yap Sean Yee bettered her own national record in the women's high jump on Sunday to put herself in medal contention in the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August.
Sean Yee, 22, cleared 1.81 metres at the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association Throws, Jumps and Under Distance Championships at the Setiawangsa National Sports Complex in Wangsa Maju.
It was an improvement on the 1.79m she set twice in 2015 and 2016 at the Pahang Open and Asean University Games respectively.
Sean Yee's first attempt at the record came at 1.80m before pushing the bar higher to clear 1.81m. However, she came unstuck in her effort at 1.82m.
The new mark would have been good enough for a bronze medal at the 2015 Sea Games in Singapore, where she finished sixth.
Sean Yee became the third athlete to break a national record in athletics this year following Tan Huong Leong (men's marathon) and Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (women's 100m).
