Two cops arrested for taking bribe from lorry driver

ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested two policemen for allegedly taking a bribe from a lorry operator in Kulim over a period of several months.

The duo, aged 57 and 53, were picked up at 9.30am today and would be brought to the Alor Star Court Complex tomorrow morning for remand proceedings.

It is learnt that the sergeant and corporal had demanded bribes from the lorry operator, ranging between RM850 and RM900 monthly.

The bribe was for them not to take action against the lorry driver for various traffic offences under the Road Transport Act 1957.

MACC investigation director Datuk Simi Abd Ghani confirmed the arrest.

He said an investigation is being carried out under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The men could face a maximum 20 years' jail term and fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
