Two former immigrations officers charged with graft

IPOH: Two former state Immigration Department officers were charged at the Ipoh Sessions court for accepting bribes as inducement not to conduct raids on an entertainment outlet in Manjung.

The department’s former director, Zulhairin Yahya, 45, was alleged to have received a RM10,000 cash bribe on Nov 5, 2015, and another RM4,000 on Nov 12, 2015, as an inducement for not carrying out checks and raids at The Bos KTV entertainment outlet at Persiaran PM2/5, Pusat Bandar Seri Manjung.

The department’s former prosecution unit head Zaidi Dali, 49, was alleged to have accepted the RM10,000 cash, on behalf of both of the accused, on Nov 5, 2015, and another RM7,000 on Nov 11, 2015.

They were charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20-year imprisonment and a maximum fine of RM10,000 or five times the bribe, whichever is higher, if convicted.

Judge S. Indra Nehru fixed May 5 for mention and granted a RM30,000 bail for each of the accused.

She also ordered for the duo’s passports to be surrendered and for them to report to the nearest MACC office every month.
