2 face jail time, fines for harbouring civets, Dusky Leaf monkeys

KUALA LUMPUR: A factory worker on Tuesday was charged with four counts of illegally harbouring three Asian Palm civets and seven Dusky Leaf monkeys which are protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Intan Mazura Mohd Mokhtar, 36, who wept as she stood before sessions court judge Shamsudin Abdullah, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On the first and second counts, Intan was charged with keeping two male and one female Asian Palm civet, which is an offence under the first schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

On the third and fourth counts, she was accused of keeping one male and six female Dusky Leaf monkeys, which are protected species under the first schedule of the Act, without licence.

She allegedly committed the offences at her house at Jalan Ampang Kiri, No 6, Desa Pasifik here, at 12.30pm on March 28.

Her charge under Section 60 (1) (a) of the Act for keeping the male species carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, or a jail term of not more than two years, or both, if convicted.

Her charge under Section 62 of the same Act for keeping the female species carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, or a jail term of not more than five years, or both, if convicted.

Intan, who is a mother of one, pleaded for a minimum bail amount, as she needs to take care of her child, who is still in school.

Shamsudin allowed her RM30,000 bail, with one surety, and fixed April 21 for mention.

Earlier, Wildlife and Natural Parks (Perhilitan) prosecuting officer Nazaruddin Kamarudin proposed RM40,000 be imposed on the accused.

Intan was unrepresented.

In the same, court, Pakistani Shabbir Ahmed Khan, 46, was charged with two counts of keeping two male and one female Dusky Leaf monkeys, which are protected species under the Act without licence.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Shabbir allegedly committed the offences in front of the Al-Hidayah mosque in Sentul here, at 6pm, on March 27.

The court allowed RM30,000 bail, with two sureties, and ordered for Shabbir to surrender his passport to the court until the disposal of the case.

The court also ordered for him to report to the police station on the first day of each month.

His case will also come up for mention on April 21.

Shabbir was represented by counsel Muhammad Afif Che Had.
