KUNDASANG: An injured Canadian climber stranded on Mount Kinabalu was successfully rescued by the Mountain Search and Rescue Unit (Mosar) and brought down from the mountain today.
Nicole Catherine, 28, is believed to have dislocated her left leg while trekking along the world’s highest via-ferrata at 10.30am yesterday, the State Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement today.
After Mosar reached and tended to Catherine, they awaited the helicopter ambulance which would have transported her to safety.
“But the helicopter could not retrieve the victim, as it was unable to land at the helipad in Laban Rata due to heavy rain at 2.30am,” the Department said.
Mosar had no choice but to transport Catherine down the mountain on a stretcher, with members of the team taking turns carrying the 130kg victim to the Pendant Hunt in Laban Rata, there they spent a night.
“The operation to carry the victim down the mountain resumed this morning, this time, with the help of six Kinabalu Park staff, 12 Mosar personnel and two Mountain Torq trainers.
“They reached the Timpohon Gate (entrance to the mountain trail) at 2.15pm and the travel agent involved drove the victim to the district hospital in Kota Kinabalu,” the Department added.
