Tanjung Malim crash: Family of 6 laid to rest

SHAH ALAM: The mood was solemn as the remains of the family of six, killed in a horrific crash near Tanjung Malim on Sunday, arrived at Hall 1 of the Nirvana Memorial Park.

The caskets bearing the remains of Lam Leong Choy, 76; Lam Wai Loon, 46; Wong Check Lee, 53; Lam Jie Yang, 19; Lam Jie Hong, 13; and Lam Wai Keat, 35, arrived at about 12pm from Nirvana Memorial Centre in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

Close to 20 relatives, many of whom are the grandnephews and grandnieces of Leong Choy, took part in the prayers and final rites led by a nun and monks for about two hours.

More than 100 family members, relatives and friends also paid their final respects.

Jie Hong’s casket was the first to be wheeled into the incinerator at about 1.18pm followed by Jie Yang, Wai Keat, Check Lee and Wai Loon.

When Leong Choy’s casket was wheeled into the incinerator, the family broke down in tears.

Leong Choy’s widow, Ng Siew Yin,71, was not present throughout the ceremony.

It is believed that she was advised against attending the funeral and was accompanied by other family members at home.

The urns of the six will be placed at the Nirvana Memorial Park here.

Meanwhile, Nirvana Asia Limited chief operating officer Datuk Freddy Chan said the company will bear the full expenses of the family’s funeral.

Chan said the family had agreed to accept the offer made by Nirvana Asia Limited managing director Tan Sri Kong Hon Kong and deputy managing director, Jeff Kong.

“We sympathise with Ng who has lost six family members so suddenly and we see this as our moral responsibility to assist her during this difficult time,” said Chan when met today.

On Sunday morning, the six were killed when a trailer rammed into their MPV at Km403.3 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near the Tanjung Malim toll plaza.

The trailer driver involved in the crash has been remanded since Monday.

It was understood that the driver had six previous driving offences including a criminal record under the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

He had also been booked for driving without a licence in the past.
