KUALA KUBU BARU: The driver of a trailer lorry which crashed last Sunday into an MPV on the North-South Expressway (NSE) near the Tanjung Malim toll plaza, killing a family of six, claimed trial at the magistrate's court today to driving at a dangerous speed.
Muhammad Syahrul Nizam Anuar, 27, who was clad in a dark blue t-shirt with a ripped sleeve, merely said he was ‘not guilty’ when the charge was read to him before sessions court judge Zulhelmy Hasan, who acted as a magistrate.
Syahrul is accused of speeding at Km 403.2 of the NSE at 7.46am on April 2, when the collision occurred.
His charge, under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, carries a jail term of between two and 10 years, and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, if convicted.
The judge allowed Syahrul RM10,000 bail with one surety, and fixed May 4 for mention.
He also ordered that the accused's driving licence be seized until the disposal of the case.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Amin Azmi prosecuted, while Syahrul was unrepresented.
On Sunday, Syahrul is said to have lost control of his earth-laden northbound lorry, which skidded and ploughed into an MPV in the same lane.
MPV occupants Lam Wai Loon, 46, his wife Wong Check Lee, 53, and their sons Lam Jie Yang, 19 and Lam Jie Yong, 13; as well as Wai Loon’s father, Lam Leong Choy, 76, and brother, Lam Wai Keat, 38, died at the scene.
