Three Kelantan border policemen among four remanded for extortion

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu police have obtained a four-day remand order against four men for their alleged involvement in an extortion case yesterday.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Hamzah said three of the suspects are border enforcement officers, while the fourth is a 53-year-old villager.

The officers, aged between 31 and 39, are believed to be based in Pengkalan Kubor, Kelantan.

Abdul Aziz said the four men accosted a local trader at Lorong Surau Baru, Pasir Panjang here, at around 11.30pm.

"They approached the victim on the pretext of carrying out an inspection, before attempting to extort money from him.

“They were overheard by the victim’s relative, who then shouted for other villagers to come to the victim’s aid," he said.

Abdul Aziz said the suspects were apprehended at the scene by villagers, who handed them over to the police later.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
