Police nab man ferrying RM2,300 worth of illegal fireworks

SERI ISKANDAR: Police have seized numerous firecrackers and fireworks worth RM2,300 and arrested a man yesterday.

District police chief Supt Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the Perak Tengah police patrol team stopped a 43-year-old man by Jalan Teluk Sena-Kunci Air Salleh, Kampung Gajah near here at about 12.45pm in a Proton Waja for acting suspiciously.

“Upon inspection, the team found four packets of Candela China 30, six boxes of Happy Boom, nine packets of Banger Great Britain, 15 boxes of Magic Boom and 30 packets of ‘mercun bola’, in the car’s bonnet.

“The firecrackers and fireworks, which were banned by the government, could also pose danger to the public lives and safety,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters at a press conference at the Perak Tengah police district headquarters.

Mohamad Zainal said police believed that the firecrackers were to be sold at the night market and Ramadhan bazaar nearby Kampung Gajah.

From their preliminary investigation, it was found that the firecrackers and fireworks were supplied from within the area.

“The man was detained and has no criminal record,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

If found guilty, the man risks a jail term not more than seven years or a fine not more than RM10,000 or both.
