KUALA LUMPUR: In yet another in a series of shocking cases, a woman and her boyfriend were arrested today for allegedly abusing her 4-year-old daugther.
The incident went public after several photos depicting a girl with bruises on her body, including her private parts, as well as stitches on her head, emerged on social media and went viral on May 24.
Adding a dark twist to the case, the images’ uploader claimed on social media that police had refused to look into the matter when the girl’s father approached a police officer at a hospital.
City police chief Datuk Amar Singh said the woman and her boyfriend were detained under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 to assist investigations.
It is learnt that the duo turned themselves in at Ulu Yam today.
Amar, however, refuted the claim that police had failed to take early action on the case.
“The victim’s father lodged a police report at the Cheras district headquarters on May 19. Investigations (were then) initiated by the Criminal Investigation Department and Sexual Investigation Division (D11).
“However, (the father) retracted his report later (on grounds) that his ex-wife had apologised for her actions. Police continued the investigation even after that,” Amar said in a statement today.
The girl is now under the supervision of D11.
