3 Sandakan men charged with planning to join terrorists in Philippines

SANDAKAN: The sessions court here today charged three men with planning to fight alongside terrorists in the southern Philippines last month.

Local man Nor Azmi Zahyi, and Indonesians Faisal Abu Bakar and Ali Mirson were charged under Section 130J of the Penal Code (Act 574).

Nor Azmi and Faisal allegedly committed the offence on June 15 at 12.20pm in front of a boutique here.

Faisal was also charged under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1968 (Act 357) for possessing three 27.3cm knives at the same place and time.

On the same date, Ali had tried to fly to the Philippines from Sandakan airport at about 6.15pm.

He was also charged under Section 130J B(1)(a) of the Penal Code for having Islamic State (IS)-related material in his phone.

Sessions judge Ummu Kalthom Abd Samad fixed Aug 22 for case remention.

Mohd Faisal Mohd Nor represented Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam.

The three men were unrepresented.
