Police sweep Felda settlements for drug-related crimes in 2-day operation

KUANTAN: Police arrested 305 suspected offenders during an integrated two-day operation codenamed Ops Sarang at Felda settlements statewide today.

Pahang Criminal Investigation Department (Narcotics) chief Superintendent Lam Thiam Huat said 219g of heroine, 30.04g of syabu, 7.16g of ganja, 700g of ketum leaves and 1.7 litres of ketum juice have been seized in the operation since yesterday.

He said apart from the drugs, police also recovered two home-made guns along with 209 ball bearings, a samurai sword, a knife and a modified trimming scissor.

“The suspects, aged between 19 and 56, were picked up at the Felda settlements. They were detained for various offences including possessing drugs, testing positive for drug abuse and distributing drugs.

“Most of the suspects are plantation workers and some were jobless. The series of raids also led us to recover three stolen motorcycles in Rompin, Temerloh and Jerantut (respectively),” he told reporters this afternoon.

He said the operation also involved Bukit Aman’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING), National Anti-Drugs Agency(NADA), the Civil Defence Force and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).

Lam described the operation, based on the information gathered from the public, as successful and efficient especially in dealing with drug abuse at Felda settlements.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter, he said two men from Penang were arrested with 2.26kg of heroin worth RM56,000 when they were stopped by police at Bentong town about 12.30am on July 12.

He said checks revealed the men had drove from Penang with the drugs, which was meant for distribution in Felda settlements in Temerloh and Maran.
