Suspect with convictions for drug-related offence nabbed after bid to evade police roadblock in Johor

KOTA TINGGI: A routine police roadblock, deployed for the Chinese New Year Op Selamat, resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old man with previous drug-related convictions.

The suspect, who tested positive for methamphetamine, had earlier made an abrupt U-turn to avoid the police roadblock at Km0.4 of the Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang, here, yesterday.

This prompted the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division officers stationed at the roadblock to pursue the suspect, who was driving a 4X4 pickup truck.

District police chief Superintendent Hussin Zamora said the man was boxed in by the trailing traffic officers near a traffic light junction at KM32.7 of Jalan Kota Tinggi - Kulai.

Zamora said although the officers did not find anything suspicious on the man or in his vehicle, they took him in for questioning as he could not produce his driving licence.

He was escorted to the district headquarters where he underwent a urine test and a background check.

The suspect tested positive for meth abuse and was found to have three convictions for drug-related offences.

Zamora said the case was being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
