Police arrest man despite fleeing to another state

GEORGE TOWN: A 38- year-old man thought he could escape the law when he killed a man by hitting him with a helmet recently before fleeing from the state.

However, information spread by the police to all states led to the arrest of the man who was hiding in his friend's house in Cheras, Selangor.

"He was detained about 3am today at the house and brought here for further investigation. We have obtained seven days remand from the court," said northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar in a statement today.

On Sept 22, the victim Lim Kok Boon was pounded by two men with helmets at a flat in Kampung Melayu here.

During the 10.15pm incident, the two men were said to be packing drugs in a 14th floor room meant for rubbish.

When the victim approached, they quickly threw the drugs into garbage bins thinking that they had been spotted by a policeman but started to hit the victim after realising he was not a policeman.

He was rushed to Penang Hospital for treatment but died three days later.

Police detained 23-year-old man on Sept 25 and also found the helmets used by the two men to attack Lim.

The case was initially investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon. It has now been reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries a mandatory death sentence.
