Septuagenarian Langkawi woman injured in home robbery; one of two robbers detained by son, neighbours

LANGKAWI: A 70-year-old woman was lightly injured during a robbery at her home in Kampung Ayer Hangat early today.

Her screams for help, however, brought her son and several others running to her aid in the 3am incident, leading to the apprehension of one of the two men who broke into her home.

A short video clip, which has since gone viral on social media, showed the man being questioned by another man, believed to be the woman’s son, who lives nearby, as to why he had broken into the house.

At the same time, a woman could be heard telling those gathered that she had screamed for help when she found two men in her home.

It is understood that the woman was asleep at the time but had been awakened by the commotion caused by the two men when they were rummaging through her house for items to steal.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the suspect, aged 17, had in his possession a knife which was believed to have been used in the incident.

“We are now looking for the teenager’s accomplice,” he said.

Che Ghazali said a urine test on the teenager came back positive for methamphetamine.

Police are investigating the case under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt while committing robbery, which carries a maximum 20 years’ jail, fine or whipping upon conviction.
