KL-wide police operation finds illegal gambling on the wane

KUALA LUMPUR: In their latest effort to eradicate illegal gambling, City police raided 115 premises here as part of "Ops Waran Geledah" yesterday.

City deputy Criminal Investigation Department (CID) (Intelligence and Operation) chief Assistant Commissioner Alzafny Ahmad said police obtained a search warrant to conduct the operation on Wednesday.

Alzafny said the operations were to check premises believed to still be in possession of illegal gambling machines.

"We had raided all 115 premises before. (Yesterday), we revisited them to examine whether they are operating (illegal gambling machines) secretly.

"Of the total, we only found gambling machines at two premises in Chow Kit and Jalan Ampang," he told reporters during a press conference at the Dang Wangi police headquarters today.

Four computer monitors, seven CPUs and eight gambling simulators were seized during the operation.

Alfazny said the findings of yesterday’s operations prove that the hard work of his men over the past month has paid off.

"We formed 32 teams one month ago to monitor the suspected premises, acting on intelligence and tip-offs. I am satisfied with the result.

"We will continue the operations and obtain search warrants from court if needed (from time to time)," he said.

Last week, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim announced that a committee had been formed to crack down on illegal gambling nationwide.

It was a mandate of the newly-installed Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Fuzi Harun.

Noor Rashid, who heads the committee, said he has three plans of action: to identify gambling dens; to identify those directly involved in operating them; and to take stern action against gambling den operators.

The committee is made up of all state police chiefs and CID chiefs.
