Aquatics coach expected to be charged with rape tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The aquatics coach detained over an allegation that he raped a national diving athlete here is expected to be charged tomorrow.

City police Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said the coach would be brought to the court complex in Jalan Duta in the morning.

“The suspect would be charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code (for rape),” he said.

The 35-year-old coach was alleged to have raped the underage diver on Sept 26 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.

The victim lodged a report on Sunday which led to the coach’s arrest the following day.

The coach, originally from China, had been working in the country for over five years. He was said to be married to a Malaysian and has permanent resident status.

This is the first major allegation of sexual abuse among the Malaysian sporting fraternity in more than two decades.
