'Funny pair' Nazirul-Wendy claim gold on debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Scratch pair Hanis Nazirul Jayasurya and Wendy Ng showed their experience as they eased to gold on the final day of the Malaysia Open Diving Championships in Bukit Jalil today.

The national team duo scored 45.60, 42.60, 62.10, 54.00 and 58.50 to emerge victorious in the 3m springboard synchronised mixed pair event on a combined 262.80 at the National Aquatics Complex.

Sarawak's Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin-Soh Tze Kang settled for silver on 213.06 while Kuala Lumpur's Choo Jin Wei-Ameera Irdina Mazwan (183.60) completed the podium.

Wendy, 30, said she was pleased with their performance considering their limited preparations.

"We had only trained together for the last three days, before that we had been solely focusing on the events we had competed in at the Hangzhou Asian Games (Oct)," said Wendy.

"Although there were not that many pairs competing, I feel that it is still a good achievement. Of course we still much room for improvement."

Nazirul, 22, said he is prepared to team up with Wendy again for future competitions.

"Initially, we thought it was a bit funny when we were told to pair up because of the difference in size between us," said Nazirul.

"It wasn't easy at first but we managed to do it, this is our first gold together as a pair.

"It won't be easy in bigger competitions but I think we can continue to pair again in the future."

The 3m springboard synchronised mixed pair event is now included in the annual world championships though is not part of the Olympic programme.

Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur's Ameera Irdina Mazwan-Angeline Lee claimed bronze in the women's 3m springboard synchronised event after scoring 174.21.

The gold went to Singapore's Clara Liaw-Alycia Lim (218.46) while Hong Kong's Chan Tsz Ming-Leung Ka Sin (205.35) won silver.

National team divers Jellson Jabilin (406.00) and Bertrand Rhodict Lises (366.35) settled for second and third in the men's 10m platform individual final.

Uzbekistan's Igor Myalin (428.55) claimed the gold.
