KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a five-day remand order against Hamid Apdal to assist its probe on a case involving embezzlement of federal funds.
Hamid, 52, who is the younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, was detained at MACC office here at 9.30pm last night after he provided his statement to the graft-busters.
Hamid was brought to the magistrate's court about 11.30am and sat in the car with four MACC officers for about 30 minutes before being brought in.
The remand order, which takes effect today, was granted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie.
Hamid was represented by lead counsel Martin Tommy, Hamid Ismail, Loretto Padua Jr, and Cedric Choo.
Martin said they had applied for a two-day remand but was rejected.
"Hamid is well but he did complain of chest pain.
"We have told the MACC to take good care of him," he said.
Present was prosecuting officer Mohd Faliq Basiruddin from MACC.
Hamid is the seventh person arrested to assist in the probe into misappropriation of federal government funds for the poor in Sabah.
The others are Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony and its youth chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman; Umno division youth chiefs Jamawi Jaafar and Ariffin Kassim; businessman Yu Sin Kong and a former staff of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
MACC is expected to make more arrests in relation to the case, which saw around 60 companies awarded with 350 projects between 2009 and 2015.
