Police sweep up 101 drug addicts in Melaka from two regular haunts

MELAKA: Police today arrested 101 drug addicts, including a 28-year-old woman, from two separate locations here.

Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Afzanizar Ahmad said the drug addicts, mostly unemployed individuals, were picked up from the two locations between 3.30am and 1pm.

“We acted based on a tip-off where these locations are the ‘ports’ of these drug addicts.

“We arrested a drug pusher, who is also a drug addict in his 20s, and seized 20g of heroin and 5.3g of syabu from him under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.”

He said 53 drug addicts were arrested at an oil palm plantation in Sungai Udang, while 48 others were arrested at a former landfill site in Krubong. The addicts were aged between 18 and 60.

“Eight of them have warrants of arrest issued for drug-related offences,” he told a press conference at the oil palm plantation in Sungai Udang here.

He added that the oil palm plantation has been raided by the police at least six times this year and most of the drug addicts are habitual offenders.

The integrated operation was carried out by the narcotics team from the state police headquarters, Melaka Tengah district police headquarters and National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) involving 57 police and 10 AADK officers.

All the suspects are being investigated under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for possessing and administering drugs.
