Man who imagines himself as policeman nabbed for possessing fake pistol, bullets

SHAH ALAM: Police this morning seized a fake pistol, blank bullets and police credentials from a drug addict who told them that his hobby was to imagine himself as a policeman.

However, unfazed by his excuse, police are now investigating the 37-year-old car accessories supplier under the Firearms Act 1960, and working to find out if he had used the gun for criminal activities.

Shah Alam deputy police chief Superintendent Nek Zaidi Zakaria said the suspect was nabbed when police raided an upmarket condominium in Section 13 following intelligence received on the man.

"During the operation, a team from Shah Alam police D9 (Serious Crime) Division found a fake Walther P99 pistol and 50 blank ammo in the condominium unit where they arrested the suspect.

"Checks found that the gun which imitates the real thing was made to fire blank bullets. The suspect told police that he ordered it online through Ebay website and was keeping it as a hobby.

"Police also seized 58 name cards bearing police logo, fake Interpol credentials, a pair of handcuffs and gun holster," he said.

Nek Zaidi said police checks found that the man had no criminal record.

Police, however, did not dismiss possibility that the man could have used the pistol to carry out criminal activities.

"He told us that he imagined himself as a policeman. Maybe he is mentally unsound, or he is imagining things because of his drug abuse.

"But whatever it is, we are working to find out. We have acquired a remand order until Dec 29 against the suspect to facilitate investigation."

Nek Zaidi said the man was tested positive for methamphetamine.

The case was being investigated under Section 36 of the Firearms Act 1960 and Section 89 of the Police Act (for being in possession of police items).
