SIBU: A man believed to be under the influence of alcohol smashed the screen of an automated teller machine (ATM) at Jalan Pahlawan here on Friday night, after it failed to dispense money.
In the 11.40pm incident, the man became enraged when the ATM suddenly malfunctioned as he tried to withdraw money.
In a fit of anger, he picked up a dustbin found inside the bank premises and smashed the ATM’s screen.
“Passersby who witnessed the incident alerted the police.
“A team from the motorcycle patrol unit was deployed to the scene. The suspect was still loitering at the premises when they arrived at the bank.
“He was subsequently arrested,” said Sibu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zailanni Amit.
He said police believe the man was drunk, based on the smell of his breath when he was interrogated by the unit.
“The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief,” Zailanni added.
