8 men, including 5 TM contractors, nabbed for cable theft

PORT KLANG: Police have nabbed a cable theft gang believed to have been masterminded by five Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM ) contractors here.

Klang Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazelan Paijan said policemen spotted eight suspicious looking men near a lorry along Jalan Lebuh Sultan Abdul Samad Bandar Sultan Suleiman at 12.45am today.

The Bandar Sultan Suleiman police force, he said, were on their crime prevention rounds when they noticed the men, believed to be five TM contractors, one fisherman and two car foremen.

“Our inspections found that four of the men were wearing shirts with the words TM Contractor printed on them, while another four men were using hoe to dig out the manholes.

“Police inspected the men and found nothing amiss. However, we found loads of tools used for cutting and for stealing telecommunication cables. We also found cables that have been cut at the rear of the vehicle when we inspected the lorry.

“The suspects failed to show any letter of permission from TM to work at the location. Police also found that they had made attempts to dig out cables planted on the ground.

“We then arrested the eight men on suspicion of being involved in stealing cables and were taken to the Bandar Sultan Suleiman station for further investigation,” he said.

Mazelan said police also seized a red Mitsubishi lorry, a green motorcycle, three cable cutters and one white sack containing TM cables that had been cut, among others.
