Man remanded for attempting to set fire to lorry

JEMPOL: A man, angered over a lorry grazing his car, attempted to set fire to the lorry at Jalan Tembangau-Bahau here yesterday.

Jempol police chief Superintendent Muhd Nur Hishamuddin Hashim said the incident happened around 10am when the 36-year-old man, in his Proton Satria, was on his way home to Felda Tembangau.

Along the way, a lorry from the opposite direction came to close to the suspect's vehicle causing him to veer off the road.

"The suspect then chased the lorry for about 10 kilometres, before the lorry stopped near a farm in Pelanting Jernih, Ayer Hitam. The driver then scolded the 22-year-old lorry driver, who is also a security guard," he said.

Hishamuddin said the lorry driver was also attacked with an iron rod.

“Fearing for his life the victim ran and left his vehicle at the side of the road. After 10 minutes, the suspect went back with a parang and a bottle filled with petrol,” Hishamuddin said.

According to Hishamuddin, the suspect wanted to burn the lorry before fleeing the scene.

“We received a report made by the victim at the Ayer Hitam police station. The suspect was caught in his house on the same day at 4pm,” he said.

The suspect has been remanded for four days until Wednesday. The case is being investigated for causing mischief by fire.
