Man shot on left leg when attempting to attack police with machete

PENAMPANG: A man was injured when he was shot at for trying to attack the police at Mile 10, Jalan Sepanggar , early Monday morning.

Prior to the 2am incident near Kampung Lokub in Menggatal, a police patrol unit approached the 31-year-old suspect who was with three accomplices inside a Nissan Vanette for suspicious behaviour.

The suspect who was driving the van sped off trying to flee from the police.

Sabah police deputy commissioner Datuk Razarudin Husain@Abd Rasid said the suspect made a sudden U-turn, causing the van to swerve and hit a Toyota Avanza.

His three accomplices left the vehicle and escaped while suspect went out of the vehicle charging towards the police with a machete in hand.

“The suspect continued his attempt to attack the police despite warnings, eventually leading to the police firing a shot at his left leg.

“He was detained and sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment,” he said during a press conference at the district police station here.

Razarudin said the suspect was reported to be stable and will be remanded until Feb 11 to assist investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code (attempted murder).

Initial probe found the group may be planning to commit house breaking.

“From our interrogation, we nabbed one of his accomplice at Inanam area around midnight and efforts are being made to hunt the other two.

“We also found the suspect has a prior criminal record and police is still investigating whether the gang has been involved in other cases,” he added.
