Robbery suspect who attacked cops with parang shot dead in Ampang Jaya

KUALA LUMPUR: A foreigner who attacked police with a parang was shot dead in Jalan Memanda 10, Ampang Jaya, here, at 11.55pm last night.

The man and four other suspects were trying to escape in a Toyota Vios when officers from the serious crimes investigation division stopped the car.

A few hours earlier, police had received a report about a robbery in the city involving a local man with an estimated loss of US$150,000 (RM595,800).

Two of the suspects were apprehended. The other two managed to escape.

Selangor police Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmad said one of the officers was injured in the attack.

“Forced to defend themselves, police fired several shots in the direction of the suspect. He was confirmed dead at the scene,” Fadzil told the New Straits Times today.

“The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.”

A source said the group’s modus operandi involved robbing individuals during foreign currency transactions.

“They deceive a victim by offering to sell US dollars at a lower rate than the market price or buy it at a higher rate than the market price. The victim is then robbed during the transaction,” the source said.
