Purr-nalty: TTDI man who threw shoe at cat fined RM2,000

KUALA LUMPUR: An architect who threw his shoe at a stray cat in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here last year was fined RM2,000 in default of two months’ jail by the magistrate’s court here today.

Magistrate Wong Chai Sia imposed the fine on Zaini Othman, 59, after he pleaded guilty to the charge of assaulting and terrifying the black feline.

Zaini committed the offence at the lobby of Intan Tower Maskiara Residence, Jalan Datuk Sulaiman between 6.40pm and 6.43pm on Sept 20, 2017.

The charge, under Section 44(1)(a) of the Animal Act 1953, read together with the Animal Act (Amendment) 2013 and punishable under Section 44(1) of the same Act, carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a jail sentence of up to one year, or both, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Zaini, who was unrepresented, said he did not know that his act was against the law. He paid the fine.
