Man allegedly beaten by mob for 'running over' cat

BUTTERWORTH: A man, accused of running over a cat, became victim of a mob attack at the Rumah Pangsa Hijau in Mak Mandin here last night.

The 32-year-old was beaten with helmets and bare hands by several men, unknown to him, in the 10.15pm incident.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the victim was on his way home when he was approached by the group of 12 men, who had accused him of running over a cat earlier with his motorcycle while on his way to the parking lot.

“The victim denied the accusation which prompted several men to attack him with helmets and bare hands.

“The victim complained of pain on his head. Checks showed that the victim did not know the suspects.

“The victim also claimed only five men had attacked him while the others happened to be there at that time.

“He also said that the men are not occupants of the flats,” he said, adding that there was no closed circuit television (CCTV) camera at the scene to capture images of the attack.

He said no witnesses have come forward to assist in investigation.

“The victim had sought treatment at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

“Checks by doctor showed the victim did not sustain internal and external injuries. There were also no signs of swelling or bruises as a result of being beaten.

“The victim will however be hospitalised for high blood pressure,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Police are hunting down the suspects and urged those who witnessed the incident to assist in investigations.
