Seberang Prai ramps up cybercrime prevention with the help of police

SEBERANG PRAI: In the face of a rising trend of cybercrime in Malaysia, particularly the increasing incidents of online scams, the Seberang Perai Municipal Council has forged a close partnership with the police to tackle these activities head-on in Seberang Perai.

The council, in a Facebook post on Feb 6, said that there have been thousands of reported cybercrime cases in Penang alone, culminating in the loss of millions of ringgit for victims.

"The urgent need for public awareness and vigilance against these sophisticated and deceitful crimes has prompted Seberang Perai Municipal Council to collaborate closely with the police.

"They have jointly undertaken this to disseminate information through digital billboards and centralised counters within the council's facilities.

"This initiative aims to educate the residents of Seberang Perai about the dangers of fraudulent activities and cybercrime.

"The community must be aware of the various types of scams proliferating, including the Macau scam, love scam, mule accounts, e-commerce crimes, phishing, business email compromises, TAC number frauds, non-existent loan scams, and investment scams, among others," the post read.

In recognition of the robust cooperation between the council and the police in raising awareness and educating the residents, Penang Police Chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin has awarded a certificate of appreciation for the Commercial Crime Awareness Campaign to Seberang Perai Mayor Datuk Azhar Arshad.

The council advises all Seberang Prai citizens to remain vigilant against cybercrime and to thoroughly understand the modus operandi of these scams to prevent falling victim to them.
